The caricature of Obama as a profligate queen relies on the racist stereotype of an "uppity Negro," which emerged among slave masters in an earlier American era.

I'm not a big fan of cracking on the First Lady - any First Lady. She didn't run for office. Her husband did.

I threw this up here because of the allegation that it's racist. I find that to be a bit of a reach. I think you really have to want to see racism in this. While I think there is plenty of racism aimed at the Obamas, I don't think we do anyone any favors by claiming it's there when it might not be.

Several First Ladies - and female political figures in general - have been mocked with the theme of being ostentatious, out-of-touch, or otherwise acting royal in a way that mimics the long discredited stereotype of Marie Antoinette. It's an old, familiar meme.

Bit of a reach?

Much more than a bit. More like an act of desperation.

An absolutely ignorant, irresponsible, uninformed piece of yellow journalism, and an example to the rest of the leftist media. Knight, you've outdone yourself, and you stand as an example of why the newspaper is rightfully destined to die out as a media outlet. As both an American that happens to be black, and a Conservative, I find nothing racist about this image. However, I do find plenty of racism in you. Like all leftists, you hide behind skin color as a shield. You make ethnicity and sexual orientation the center of all political conversation, showing that if anyone has an obsession with it, its the left (i.e.: people like you). This hit piece you've scrawled is nothing more than another clear indicator that the liberal tank is on "E", and you've no intellectual ammunition left to fight with, so, as opposed to debating issues, you argue nonsensical BS, like this. I remember the last time this happened, in regards to the "jokerized" Obama picture. The left touted this as an example of 'right-wing hatred' and 'racism', only to have it found out that a leftist "Palestinian" did it. Where were you, then? Hiding under your desks, plotting another outrage to manufacture. It is no wonder California is the cesspool it is, today; with your writings enabling it, they'll never climb out of the sewer they've voluntarily walked themselves into.

yeah, I gotta agree with you there.

heck, even if it was racist, I'd be more offended by the lack of originality and thought put into it.

meanwhile the scumbag the gNOp like to hold us as their preference for the office used to take profitable businesses into bankrupcy and pocket (and outsource) the profits. Another one is a serial adulterer (and hypocritu while doing so) and likes to keep his current wifey in Tiffanys. Have yet to hear from girlfriend #4 but confident that is coming. Another made his $$$ in porn but is now thumping that craw. Frothy....well, he's in a catagory all to himself. Most think he's so anally closeted it isn't funny and his family had alate term abortion and now that piece of trash doesn't want the American people to have either birth control OR health care. paul is just looney toons. Huntsman doesn't fit but is still trying to out conservitive the rest of the clowns in the clown college!

A baldly racist depiction of First Lady Michelle Obama

Perhaps not baldly racist but Marie Antoinette was certainly seen by the French as "uppity" and a bitch and certainly profligate. The point of the caricature was to be unkind and insulting to the First Lady and there it succeeded. But it is far from clever.

Frankly, I think Michelle Obama cuts a strong image in her "portrait".

sorry, I think this is stupid, but fair game and not racist. We can't have every single thing be racist because she is black. She is black, so what ?? I think they are saying that she is a ditz concerned with bs while France starves. Not a good comparison, she is a really educated underutilized person in my book, but this is satire and maybe you could call it sexist, but I don't even think it meets that threshold. It is kind of just silly.
